Micro-Credentials and Their Place in STEM

Updated: Jul 28

In ever-growing industries such as STEM, consistent developments and new tactics are found for educators and students alike. A recent invention, micro-credentials, provides alternatives to full-scale degrees and education. But what are micro-credentials, and what use do we have for them? Let’s explore!

What are micro-credentials?

Micro-credentials are short, skill-based recognitions that allow individuals to showcase mastery in specific areas or specifications. They are designed to be personalized, flexible, and performance-based.

What are some pros of micro-credentials?

  1. Affordability: Micro-credentials are typically more affordable than traditional college degrees or trade school certifications.

  1. Stackable: Micro-credentials are stackable, allowing for diverse skills and flexibility in career focus.

  1. Specific Skill Development: People who pursue micro-credentials can tailor their skills based on personal preference, job demand, and more.

What are the cons of micro-credentials?

  1. Lack of Standardization: Since a universal standard has not been established, standards and quality will vary greatly across various providers.

  1. Unreliable Creators: Not every creator of micro-credentials has good intentions or the proper ideas to execute them. This can cause trouble determining what’s legitimate versus what is not.

  1. Slow Rollout: Since the micro-credential industry is still relatively new, many employers are still behind on the technology, and by extension may not recognize or accept micro-credentials.

  1. Limited Depth: As opposed to college degrees and certifications, micro-credentials are smaller scale and more detail/subject focused. This may not be beneficial for individuals wanting a broader subject to specialize in.

What is the future of micro-credentials?

While the future seems uncertain for micro-credentials, they certainly have the possibility to become something truly great. They are expected to become integral in the job market, especially in the STEM industry, as standardization and technicalities improve.
