Osbourn Dorsey: Pioneering African American Inventor

Updated: May 15

Many people's great contributions have paved the way for groundbreaking breakthroughs in the ever-evolving disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Osbourn Dorsey is one of these visionaries—an innovator whose genius and persistence continue to inspire future generations. In December 1878, Osbourn Dorsey, an African American man created the doorknob and doorstop. Because he was born during a time when nothing was written about him—most notably due to his race--little is known about his life excluding the following.

Osbourn Dorsey was born in the late nineteenth century, a time when African Americans had little opportunities to pursue professions in invention. At an extremely young age Dorsey expressed interest in mechanical gadgets and mechanisms. During his youth, Dorsey recognized the problematic nature of door entryways. People had to use latches to close their doors or leather straps for handles. During his teenage years, he set out on a journey to remedy these personal frustrations against these poor designs. Thus he revealed the modern doorknob, a groundbreaking invention of his that spent years in testing in 1878, at the stunning age of fifteen. This invention made opening and closing doors significantly easier, an absolute game changer for the time.

Dorsey's innovation quickly gained popularity. The doorknob facilitated access and improved security, altering how people interacted with their surroundings. Its impact extended well beyond the house, into public spaces, corporations, and educational institutions across the world. The fact that the doorknob's design has remained mostly unchanged demonstrates its continued usefulness. Osbourn Dorsey's innovative nature did not end with the invention of the doorknob, however. He would go on to make many more notable contributions to technology, promoting accessibility and easy use. His ideas ranged from refrigeration developments to heating system upgrades, demonstrating his knack for creating innovative solutions.

Osbourn Dorsey's story is a great motivator for ambitious innovators and problem solvers, especially those of color. His unwavering pursuit of a simpler and more effective solution to a common problem exemplifies the value of innovation and tenacity. Dorsey's influence on our daily lives reminds us to value the often-overlooked technologies that form our world.
