Hack the Hood is a nonprofit organization created in Oakland, California. Founded in 2014, it aims to equip young POC with useful technology experience and community and leadership skills. At the heart of Hack the Hood’s mission are their tech education programs, offered for free to qualifying applicants. According to the website, participants will “build these skills while engaging in discussions about social justice and examining the impact of technology on our communities.” Students aged 16-25 will learn web development, coding, and digital media skills.

Additionally, collaboration is a crucial mechanic of the program.

The organization firmly believes that technology can be a conduit for social change. Hack the Hood pushes for a power shift in marginalized communities, encouraging them to pursue creation instead of remaining consumers. This empowerment is necessary for the tech industry, which, like other STEM ones, suffers greatly from a lack of diversity and representation.

Hack the Hood boasts great networking and mentorship opportunities. They connect their participants with professionals who foster inspiration. The organization has an impressive success rate, and many alumni are going on to pursue tech careers or further their knowledge. It aims to build a new generation of skilled, confident, and socially aware leaders—and it succeeds.

As their efforts expand, Hack the Hood remains a beacon of hope for marginalized youths across the country. If you are interested in learning more about their mission, please visit their website
