I recently asked my network how they had found their career path. Of course, their perspective was focused on the “now” in where their career path concluded in their current position. All to say, it may change!
As I thought about my own path, I realized that I could boil down the contributors to the basics: Who, What, Where, Why, and When. Surprising? No.
Who
Influencers, Mentors, Colleagues, Personalities, etc.
What
Topic, Area of interest, type of science (i.e. theoretical or experimental), etc.
Where
School, curriculum, age, hands-on experience, etc.
Why
Key drivers, personality, passion, etc.
When
School grade, research lab experience, specific course, etc.
Of the above, what was most striking was that individuals stated it was the “WHO” and “WHAT” which had the largest impact on their career path determination.
I want to delve into this more in later posts.
