Step 2: Conduct Research

Before jumping into an experiment, scientists take time to learn what is already known about their question. Research helps build a strong foundation by exploring previous studies, reviewing reliable sources, and understanding existing theories. This step prevents unnecessary duplication, identifies gaps in current knowledge, and often helps refine the original question or hypothesis. Scientists may read peer-reviewed journal articles, books, government reports, or trusted scientific websites to gather accurate information and understand how others have approached similar problems.

Research is an essential part of nearly every STEM career. Engineers investigate existing technologies before designing new ones, healthcare professionals review the latest medical evidence before recommending treatments, and environmental scientists analyze historical data to identify trends. Conducting thorough research also strengthens critical thinking by teaching us to evaluate the credibility of sources, distinguish evidence from opinion, and recognize potential bias.
