Dr. Louise Banks

Louise is recruited by the U.S. military to decipher the alien language of the Heptapods, following the sudden appearance of their ships around the world. Through rigorous linguistic fieldwork — gathering samples, identifying patterns, testing hypotheses — she gradually unlocks the aliens’ semasiographic (symbol-based) writing system. In doing so, she discovers that learning the language alters human temporal perception, enabling her to view her entire life nonlinearly. Her breakthrough prevents global conflict and helps humanity understand the aliens’ purpose.

Accuracy Check

STEM Character Realism?

  • Linguistic process: Highly accurate (field methods, gradual decoding, sample analysis)
  • Sapir–Whorf Hypothesis: A real cognitive theory; dramatized but plausible
  • Nonlinear time perception: Fictional but grounded in theoretical physics
  • Scientific collaboration: Very realistic depiction

Louise’s depiction is considered one of the most scientifically authentic portrayals of a linguist in film.
