How it Started

On August 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially adopted a new definition of what qualifies as a planet. Although Pluto meets two of the three criteria, it does not clear its orbital neighborhood of other objects, leading to its reclassification as a dwarf planet. The decision sparked worldwide discussion and remains one of the most well-known examples of how scientific knowledge evolves as new evidence becomes available.

STEM From Activity 

Planet or Dwarf Planet? 

Challenge students to become planetary scientists. 

Have them: 

  • Research the three criteria used to define a planet.  
  • Compare Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Pluto, and another dwarf planet such as Eris or Ceres.  
  • Decide which objects meet the criteria and explain their reasoning.  
  • Discuss whether they agree with Pluto’s current classification and support their opinion with scientific evidence.  

Extension: Create a scale model of the solar system that includes dwarf planets and objects in the Kuiper Belt. 

Discussion Questions 

  1. Why do you think scientists sometimes change definitions or classifications as they learn more?  
  2. If you discovered a new object beyond Pluto, what information would you need before deciding whether it should be called a planet?
