World Soil Day
World Soil Day celebrates the importance of healthy soils in supporting life on Earth. The day raises awareness about how soil sustains agriculture, filters water, stores carbon, supports biodiversity, and provides the foundation for healthy ecosystems. It also highlights the role of science and innovation in protecting soil resources for future generations.
How it Started…
World Soil Day was first proposed by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) and was officially designated by the United Nations in 2013 through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The first official observance took place in 2014. The day was established to increase awareness of the critical role healthy soils play in food security, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience.
How To Celebrate…
- School lessons about soil science
- Community gardening and tree-planting projects
- Soil health workshops
- Agricultural education events
- Environmental conservation activities
- Composting demonstrations
- Research presentations on sustainable farming
- Citizen science projects that explore local soils
STEM From’s Take
Our Perspective…
Healthy soil is one of Earth’s most valuable natural resources, yet it is often overlooked. Soil scientists, farmers, engineers, environmental researchers, and biologists work together to protect soil so it can continue producing food, storing carbon, filtering water, and supporting ecosystems.
At STEM From, we encourage students to look beneath their feet and discover the incredible science happening underground. Understanding soil connects biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, and agriculture while demonstrating how STEM helps sustain life on our planet.
The Significance and Why We Care…
Healthy soil is essential for growing food, maintaining clean water, supporting wildlife, and helping regulate Earth’s climate. It is home to billions of microorganisms, insects, fungi, and plant roots that work together to recycle nutrients and maintain healthy ecosystems.
World Soil Day reminds us that protecting soil helps protect our future. Sustainable farming practices, erosion prevention, and scientific research all contribute to healthier communities, stronger food systems, and more resilient environments.

STEM From Activity
Soil Detective
Collect (or examine images of) different soil samples and compare:
- Color
- Texture
- Moisture
- Organic matter
- Sand, silt, and clay content
Ask students to predict:
- How do scientists study soil health? d present how collaboration and generosity can help make it a reality.
- Which soil would best support plant growth?
- Why do different soils have different properties?
Discussion Questions
- Why is healthy soil important for food production?
- What organisms live in soil, and why are they important?
- How can erosion affect ecosystems and communities?
- What farming practices help protect soil?
- Which STEM careers focus on improving soil health?
- How can individuals help protect soil in their own communities?
