How it Started

Wright Brothers Day was established by the United States Congress in 1963 to commemorate the Wright brothers’ historic achievement in powered flight. On December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville Wright piloted the Wright Flyer for the first successful sustained, controlled, powered flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft. Their four flights that day laid the foundation for modern aviation and aerospace engineering.
