How it Started…

I Am a Mentor Day is associated with National Mentoring Month, an annual January campaign created to raise awareness about the importance of mentoring and recognize people who make a difference through mentorship. The day provides mentors with an opportunity to celebrate their role, share their mentoring experiences, and encourage others to become mentors.

The broader National Mentoring Month initiative began in 2002 and has grown into a nationwide effort involving schools, nonprofits, businesses, community organizations, and mentoring programs.

How To Celebrate…

  • Thanking and recognizing mentors
  • Sharing personal mentoring stories
  • Encouraging professionals to become mentors
  • Hosting mentoring events and workshops
  • Connecting students with career professionals
  • Highlighting mentoring programs
  • Celebrating successful mentor-mentee relationships
  • Discussing the importance of guidance and professional development

STEM From’s Take

Our Perspective…

Finding your path in STEM can be difficult when you don’t know what possibilities exist. A mentor can help transform an unfamiliar career into something students can actually imagine themselves pursuing. Mentors share what their jobs are really like, explain how they reached their careers, introduce new opportunities, and help learners recognize that STEM pathways rarely follow one perfect route.

At STEM From, mentorship connects directly to career exploration and journey mapping. We believe students benefit from seeing the people behind STEM careers—not simply reading job titles. Hearing someone’s real journey, including changes in direction, challenges, unexpected opportunities, and lessons learned, can help students build their own roadmap with greater confidence.

The Significance and Why We Care…

Mentorship provides something that textbooks and career websites cannot always offer: personal experience. A scientist can explain what working in a laboratory is actually like. An engineer can describe how projects move from an idea to a finished product. A data scientist can share how they entered their field, while a healthcare professional can explain the many careers that exist beyond becoming a physician.

Mentors can also help learners develop professional skills, build networks, discover internships and educational opportunities, and navigate important career decisions. For students who have never personally known someone working in STEM, a mentor can make an unfamiliar career feel much more attainable.

STEM From Activity

Interview a STEM Mentor

Invite students to interview someone working in a STEM-related career. Questions could include:

  • What do you actually do during a typical day?
  • How did you choose your career?
  • Did you always know what you wanted to do?
  • What education or training did you complete?
  • What skills are most important in your job?
  • What surprised you about your career?
  • What mistakes or changes helped shape your journey?
  • What advice would you give someone interested in your field?

Students can use the answers to create a STEM Career Profile showing the person’s journey from education to career.

Discussion Questions

  1. What makes someone a great mentor?
  2. Who has helped you learn something important?
