How it Started

Fibonacci Day honors the Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa, better known as Fibonacci, who introduced the Fibonacci sequence to Western Europe in his 1202 book Liber Abaci. Although the sequence was known in earlier mathematical traditions, Fibonacci’s work helped popularize it and introduced the Hindu-Arabic numeral system to Europe. Today, the sequence remains one of the best-known mathematical concepts and continues to be studied in science, mathematics, and computing.

Our Perspective

Mathematics is more than numbers—it is the language of patterns. The Fibonacci sequence shows how a simple mathematical rule can describe complex systems found in flowers, pinecones, seashells, hurricanes, and even computer algorithms. It reminds us that math is a powerful tool for discovering order in both nature and technology. 

At STEM From, we encourage students to look for patterns everywhere. Recognizing relationships, making predictions, and solving problems are essential skills that connect mathematics to nearly every STEM career. 

The Significance and Why We Care… 

The Fibonacci sequence appears in many natural growth patterns and is used in fields ranging from biology and architecture to computer science and finance. While not every natural pattern follows Fibonacci numbers exactly, the sequence provides an excellent example of how mathematics helps scientists and engineers model and understand complex systems. 

Fibonacci Day also demonstrates that mathematics is creative and interconnected. Exploring number patterns strengthens logical reasoning, computational thinking, and problem-solving—skills that are valuable across all STEM disciplines.

STEM From Activity 

Fibonacci Nature Hunt

Challenge students to search for Fibonacci patterns in nature. 

Examples include: 

  • Sunflower seed spirals 
  • Pinecones 
  • Pineapples 
  • Romanesco broccoli 
  • Flower petals 
  • Ferns 

Ask students to photograph or sketch their observations and discuss why mathematical patterns might appear in nature.
