How it Started

Thanksgiving traces its origins to early harvest celebrations in North America. While the holiday is often associated with the 1621 harvest shared by the Wampanoag people and the Plymouth colonists, historians recognize that the event has often been simplified in traditional accounts and that Indigenous perspectives are an important part of understanding this history. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday during the Civil War, and in 1941, Congress established it as the fourth Thursday in November.

Thanksgiving is filled with STEM—from the farms where crops are grown to the kitchens where meals are prepared. Every Thanksgiving meal represents countless STEM innovations in agriculture, food safety, refrigeration, logistics, and sustainable farming.

Farm-to-Table Investigation

Choose one Thanksgiving food, such as turkey, potatoes, cranberries, pumpkins, or corn. 

Have students trace its journey by answering: 

  • Where is it grown or produced? 
  • What STEM careers are involved? 
  • How is it transported? 
  • How is food kept safe? 
  • How could the process become more sustainable? 

Students can create a “Farm-to-Table” flowchart illustrating each step. bservations and discuss why mathematical patterns might appear in nature. 

Discussion Questions 

  1. How does STEM help produce and deliver the food we eat?
  2. What technologies have changed farming over time?
  3. Why is reducing food waste important?
  4. How can science help make agriculture more sustainable?
  5. Which STEM career would you choose to help feed communities?
  6. What are you grateful for that has been made possible through science or technology?
