Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the history, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples throughout the Americas. The day celebrates the resilience, knowledge, and enduring impact of Indigenous communities while recognizing their important role in shaping science, agriculture, environmental stewardship, engineering, and innovation. It is also an opportunity to learn from Indigenous knowledge systems that have supported sustainable living for thousands of years.
How it Started…
Indigenous Peoples’ Day emerged as an alternative to Columbus Day to recognize the histories and cultures of Indigenous peoples that predate European colonization. The movement gained momentum in the late 20th century, with South Dakota becoming one of the first states to recognize Native American Day in 1990, followed by many cities, states, schools, and organizations adopting Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Today, the observance continues to grow as communities celebrate Indigenous cultures while promoting education, respect, and historical understanding.

Our Perspective…
Indigenous communities have practiced science, engineering, and environmental stewardship for thousands of years. Through careful observation, experimentation, and generations of shared knowledge, Indigenous peoples developed sustainable farming methods, sophisticated irrigation systems, astronomy, navigation techniques, medicine, architecture, and ecological management practices long before modern scientific disciplines were formally established.
At STEM From, we believe STEM includes many ways of knowing and understanding the world. Indigenous Peoples’ Day reminds us that innovation often comes from deep observation of nature, collaboration with communities, and a long-term commitment to caring for people and the environment.
The Significance and Why We Care…

Fun Fact
Many Indigenous agricultural practices continue to influence modern sustainable farming. One well-known example is the “Three Sisters” planting method, in which corn, beans, and squash are grown together. The corn provides support for the beans to climb, the beans help enrich the soil with nitrogen, and the squash spreads across the ground to help retain moisture and reduce weeds—an excellent example of natural systems working together.
