How it Started

National Nuclear Science Week was established in 2010 by the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, in partnership with scientific organizations, educators, and industry leaders. The annual observance was created to increase public understanding of nuclear science and its many peaceful applications. Each year, schools, universities, laboratories, hospitals, museums, and energy organizations host educational programs and hands-on STEM activities.

Our Perspective

Nuclear science is much more than power generation—it is a field that improves healthcare, agriculture, environmental research, manufacturing, and space exploration. Nuclear technologies help physicians diagnose illnesses, treat cancer, sterilize medical equipment, inspect bridges and pipelines, and even power spacecraft traveling far beyond our solar system. 

At STEM From, we encourage students to look beyond common misconceptions and explore the many positive ways nuclear science contributes to society. Understanding the science behind atoms and radiation helps students appreciate how careful research and engineering can create technologies that improve lives.
