How it Started

International Microorganism Day commemorates Antonie van Leeuwenhoek’s first observations of microorganisms through a microscope in 1676, a discovery that forever changed biology and medicine. The day was established to celebrate the field of microbiology and raise awareness about the many beneficial roles microorganisms play in our lives. It also recognizes the scientists whose research continues to expand our understanding of microbes and their impact on health, agriculture, industry, and the environment.

Our Perspective

Microorganisms may be invisible to the naked eye, but they are among the most important living things on Earth. Understanding microbes requires biology, chemistry, genetics, engineering, and data science working together.
