Dr. Carina Minardi and team brought science to life at the Boise State Fair during STEM Day with an interactive craft booth that was for all ages to enjoy. The fun activity? Building an edible DNA molecule using licorice and gummy fruits! While it was a messy endeavor it was such a fun one as well!
While participants enjoyed their sweet creations, they also learned the basics of DNA structure—double helices, base pairing, and genetic coding—in a format that was both fun and educational.
Events like this allow children and families to see that science can be playful, memorable, and accessible outside of the classroom, aligning with STEM From’s mission to inspire future scientists in everyday spaces! What was your favorite project in science class when you were a young kid?
Dr. Minardi’s Thoughts:
“I had a blast at the West Idaho Fair, bringing all things STEM to life with SWISH and STEM From! Interacting with kids and parents, we had a great time making edible DNA molecules. Although I underestimated the turnout and ran out of “DNA backbones,” we improvised and created molecular shapes for hours. Watching the kids have fun and learn was truly rewarding. As they twisted their DNA molecules, I emphasized how unique each of them is in their own special way.”
