STEM Movie Review: Lilo & Stitch

STEM Movie review for Lilo and stitch

Welcome back to STEM From’s movie review series, a segment where we give thoughts on beloved STEM-oriented or themed movies. Today, we’ll be talking about Lilo & Stitch.

Lilo & Stitch follows an alien named Stitch, who stumbles upon a young girl living in Hawaii named Lilo. Lilo lives with her big sister Nani, both orphans. The three bond, fight, and learn the meaning of family while other forces pursue Stitch.

This movie was a staple in my household, and I watched it many times growing up. While it’s been a very long time since I watched it start to finish, it exists clear as day in my mind. It has memorable animation, beautiful performances, and great messages about family. Perhaps my favorite element is the representation of Pacific Islanders, and the invasive nature of tourism in Hawaii. It stands as one of my favorites in Disney’s repertoire.

This movie’s STEM elements are, like the previous films I covered, largely fantastical. The scientific elements focus on extraterrestrial life and technology, two concepts that are hotly contested but not one-hundred-percent proven (yet). Otherwise, this movie is largely a family piece, focused on connection and familial relationships—ironically like Predator: Badlands, despite being completely different properties and tones.
