Welcome back to STEM From’s movie review series, a segment where I give thoughts on my favorite STEM-oriented or themed movies. Today, I’ll be talking about a recent release, Predator: Badlands.

Taking place in the Predator universe, Badlands follows a runt Yautja named Dek, who is on a mission to prove his worth. This mission brings him to a deadly planet, and, along the way, he makes two unlikely friends.

Easily one of the strongest in the franchise, this movie was a blast from start to finish. The lead performances from Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi and Elle Fanning are fantastic, and the two bounce off one another very well. Visually, the planet Dek fights through is phenomenal.

This movie’s STEM elements are quite phantasmal, similar to the other Predator movies. Perhaps the most relatable to current STEM trends is the existence of synthetics. Like many films that tackle A.I, robots, etc, it flirts with the concept of machines being capable of human emotion and relationships. Additionally, Dek learns to soften his edges and embrace the concept of family. So I would argue that the closest ties to STEM exist within technology, and commentary on its relation to humanity.

If you’ve seen Predator: Badlands, let me know what you think of it in the comments! Stay tuned for the next movie review!
