What is National Mentoring Month?
National Mentoring Month is a campaign aiming to bring awareness to the importance of mentoring, specifically youth mentoring, in the United States. A wide berth of elected officials, non–profits, businesses and more get involved with this amazing mission throughout the month of January.
Throughout the month, there are several days with special themes, including but not limited to: I Am A Mentor Day (Jan 6th), Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service (January 19th), and Thank Your Mentor Day (January 28th).
When did this observance begin?
This campaign was launched in 2002 by MENTOR.
Who is MENTOR?
MENTOR is a non–profit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts. The effort to boost awareness around mentorship has existed for thirty-five years, since its inception in 1990. It was founded by Geoffery Boisi and Raymond Chambers under the name One to One Partnership. In 1996, the name changed to The National Mentoring Partnership. Its final and current name is MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership.
Can anyone have a mentor?
Mentoring is helpful to any age demographic, but it is argubly most helpful to younger individuals. Younger folk are generally in higher need of guidance. That being said, if you need mentorship, there’s no age limit! Mentors can come in a variety of forms, subjects, or focuses, too, highly personalized.
